Larson, Arlys Kay, age 64, formerly of Forest Lake and St. Paul, MN, passed away
July 12, 2006 in San Diego, CA after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born October 4, 1941 to Louis & Hazel (Miller) Lemke in St. Paul, MN.
Arlys received her B.S. in Elementary Education from MN State University, Mankato in 1962. She went on to receive her Master?s in 1977 and her Education Specialist Degree in 1988, both from St. Thomas College.
Arlys taught elementary school from 1962-63 in Blue Earth, MN and from 1964-71 at Gordon Elementary in St. Paul. She taught Special Education at Lino Lakes Elementary from 1975-84. From 1985-1988 she was the Staff Development Coordinator for ISD 831 in MN. Arlys began serving as Principal for Cowern Elementary in North St. Paul in 1988, retiring in 2000.
In 2002, Arlys and her husband, Richard Larson II, moved to Oceanside, CA to be close to their grandchildren. In Oceanside, Arlys volunteered at the elementary school her eldest grandson attends.
She was a member of N. St. Paul Rotary, Forest Lake Area Retired Educators, N. St. Paul Administrators Assoc., Faith Lutheran Church, and held leadership roles within the Forest Lake Education Assoc.
In her youth, Arlys was very involved in Jehovah Lutheran Church in St. Paul. She was very active and often team statistician for St. Paul Johnson High School?s wrestling teams, for which her husband was head coach. She also supported the Johnson football teams, where her husband coached the linesmen.
Arlys had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the US, Canada, Caribbean, and Europe. She played in her bridge group for over 20 years; enjoyed education and children, especially her own grandkids. She and her husband like to fish on Forest Lake, and she always looked forward to making Christmas special for the family.
Arlys is survived by her husband, Richard Larson II; children, Richard (Carolyn) Larson III, Susan (Tom Erf) K. Larson, Erik (Amy) K. Larson; grandchildren, Ryan R., Erik C. and Marguerite L. Larson; step-grandchildren, Maya & Tayla Erf; and sister, Karen (Ron) Lentsch.
Funeral Service 12:00 PM, Friday, July 21, 2006 in FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 886 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation 4-8 PM, Thursday, July 20, 2006 at MATTSON FUNERAL HOME, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church. Interment in Acacia Park Cemetery, Mendota Heights. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
