Arthur Mathews, A.M. (Barney) Palmer, 77,of Largo, Fl and St Paul, MN, formerly Forest Lake, MN was born May 25,1931, in Jamestown, ND and died December 5, 2008 in St Paul MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Palmer and Frances Palmer and sister Marlene (Jerry) Hyland. He is survived by sons Mark ( Nancy) ; Todd (Lisa); Michael ( Irina); grandchildren, David; Sarah and Marcus; nieces Janet Rivard (Warren, Children Matthew and Jenna); Lorri Hyland ( son Todd Gunderson ) and a host of friends. Barney graduated form St Paul, Wilson H.S. in 1948. His parents moved to Forest Lake that summer and purchased Lakeside Cabins located just south of the intersection of Highway 61 and Broadway. He served in the army before attending and graduating from St Cloud State Teachers College where he earned a B.A. in secondary education. He earned his M.A. from the University of Northern Illinois. He taught and coached for two years in St. Charles, Minnesota, and then moved to Forest Lake where he taught and coached for six more years. Barney taught English and coached Basketball and Football during his career as a teacher in St. Charles, MN and here in Forest Lake before joining the staff of the Minnesota Education Association (MEA) in 1964 as a field representative. He later attained the position of Assistant Executive Director of MEA before moving to Colorado to become the Executive Director of the Colorado Education Association (CEA). Barney moved back to Minnesota to pursue a career as an independent consultant focusing on leadership training, organizational development, conflict management and collaboration. He was also a long-time member of the Forest Hills Golf Club serving as Treasurer shortly after the club's inception and continuing in many capacities including member of the Board of Directors and head of the Rules Committee. A Celebration of His Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
