David Blackbird

July 17, 1960 — March 21, 2017

David W. Blackbird was born July 17, 1960 in Rochester, New York. His father, Jerry Blackbird, was a career Marine which required his mother to pack up David and his three siblings every three years to move to a new location. From Rochester, David moved to Japan, Hawaii, and then back to North Carolina where his father retired from the Marine Corps and brought his family back to Lino Lakes, Minnesota where the family farm was purchased in 1969. David made lots of friends starting in Lino Elementary School and then Forest Lake Junior and Senior High School...including his closest forever friends in the "Rat Pack".

Competitive in Tennis, active in skiing, target shooting, and later in life boating, fishing, snowshoeing and cooking...perfecting Prime Rib, Potato Salad, and Mac & Cheese. Graduating in 1978, David joined the Marine Corps following in his father's steps he began to travel the world. Trained at Camp Pendleton, CA...then training in Japan for 6 months, his first station was in Alaska as a Grunt. David became a Marine Navigator and flew on board the KC130 Aerial Refueling Plane all over the world. Continuing his career in the Corps, David moved on to train as an Embassy Guard and was stationed in Bogota, Columbia to guard our US Embassy. David retired from the Marine Corps after 14 years of service to our country and settled in California. David went to work in the Heavy Demolition Business with Penhall in California, working his way up to management status. From Penhall David was employed by Hulcher (up righting railroad cars after accidents), and later employed by E.R.S.I. (heavy demolition again). His last employer started him out working the Midwest Region but later required him to move to California to handle that region until he left for health reasons May 2016. David met his wife, Janine Jubie, while at a "Safety Meeting" with her brother Tom in Scanlon, Minnesota. From the moment they met it was true love and they were to be together forever. They married August 16, 2010 after being together since 2004 and with that came four wonderful children, George, Kirk (Nicole), Sarah (Joel) and Jessica. David and Janine enjoyed family vacations with their kids, spouses and now Grandchildren. Trips to the Jubie Cabin on Big Sandy were plentiful...the number of Jubies, spouses, and children spending the weekend at any time could range from 30-36 people. David loved his family and friends and his family and friends LOVED him! A Celebration of David's Life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Private Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
