Dorothy Alice Johnson Gheith ("Dot"), January 25, 1932-March 26, 2011. Of Scandia, Forest Lake, and White Bear Lake, MN and Lincoln, Massachusetts. Poet-visionary-journalist Dorothy had an active intellectual life. She won the Legion award from Forest Lake High School in 1949 and was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Minnesota. In 1952 she married Mohamed Gheith and went to Egypt for five years. She worked for the UN and Arthur D. Little on the Marshall Plan there. With her husband and two children, Jehanne and Nader, she lived the middle part of her life in Massachusetts. She was proud of the fact that she was a faculty wife (Boston University). Her love of Scandia brought her back in 1995 and she was active in the local history of Hay Lake School and Scandia. She edited many people's manuscripts, did medical transcription, and was a published poet. Her commitments in life included reading, writing, singing, a love of people, and a concern with justice. Strong willed and independent, it was important to Dorothy never to be reduced: she had a deep sense of life's complexity and revered the full scope of life and nature. A frequent contributor to NPR programs, Dorothy had strong opinions on the need to resist cultural trends that went against what she saw as human needs for quietness and joy. She is preceded in death by son Nader M Gheith, brothers George, Roger, and twin David Johnson. She is survived by daughter Jehanne Gheith (married to David Need), sisters-in-law Dorothy, Phyllis, and Pat Johnson; ex-husband Mohamed A. Gheith, as well as many loving relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts to Gammelgarden. Memorial service 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Elim Lutheran Church, 20971 Olinda Trail North, Scandia. Gathering of family and friends one hour prior to service. Interment at Elim Cemetery.
