Dorothy Hembrough

November 26, 1924 — November 2, 2006

Dorothy Martin Hembrough, 81 years, of Scandia, MN, formerly of Ames, IA and Jacksonville, IL died Thursday, November 2, 2006 at her home following an extended illness with Alzheimer's.

She was born in 1924 in Jacksonville, IL; the daughter of Carl and Margaret Quiqq Martin. She married Frederick Black Hembrough on January 23, 1947 in Jacksonville, IL.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Frederick of Scandia, MN; two daughters, Barbara Woodside (husband, Mike) of Scandia, MN, Susan Hathaway (husband, Randy) of Summerfield, FL; two grandchildren, Emma and Nathan Woodside, Scandia, MN; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Martin, Colorado and Betty Lou Hembrough, Champaign, IL and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Carl Trabue Hembrough, and his fiancee, Linda Gordon; and her brother, Charles Martin.

Mrs. Hembrough graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1943 and attended Illinois College prior to graduating from Our Saviours Nursing School in Jacksonville, IL. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Galesburg and Champaign, IL and Ames, Iowa until she retired. She loved being an R.N. and spoke fondly of her patients, her fellow nurses and her student nursing days in St. Louis, MO.

Mrs. Hembrough and her husband, Frederick, built the Hembrough Animal Hospital in Jacksonville, IL during the 1950s. It brought her much joy to work side-by-side with her veterinarian husband and treat large and small animals together. When Dorothy and her husband moved to Ames, Iowa where Frederick taught in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, Dorothy became and remained active in the ISU Veterinary Auxiliary, ISU's Faculty Women's Club, Mary Greeley Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary, the Collegiate Methodist Church, the Nevada, IA O.D.O. group and was an avid fan of ISU basketball.

More than anything, Mrs. Hembrough loved her family. She was the heart of the Hembrough home always striving to comfort through delicious meals, a welcoming home, beautiful flower gardens and holidays made special because of all her efforts. Dorothy was a good neighbor and friend to so many and always had a helpful spirit towards people and animals in need.

Our family will remember her for all the love she gave us. She softened the hard edges of life for us and we are all changed forever by the life she shared so sweetly and courageously with us.
