Dr. Edward W. Ciriacy, 82 died June 21, 2006, at his home in Lino Lakes, MN., surrounded by loved ones.



Preceded in death by parents William and Elizabeth Ciriacy, and faithful companions Duke, Irish and Mr. Lucky. Survived by loving wife Norma; children, Adele "Sparkie" Ciriacy, Jr., Dr. Edward "Ted" W. Ciriacy, Jr. (Peggy), Deborah Ciriacy, Melissa (Jed) Ruberto, Timothy (Mary) Ciriacy, and their mother Adele Ciriacy, eight grandchildren, brother William (Elsie) Ciriacy, Jr., two nephews, a great nephew and great niece, and faithful companions Amigo, Tiger, Kelly and Sunny.



Dr. Ciriacy was born in Philadelphia, PA. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a graduate of Pennsylvania State College and Temple University School of Medicine. After one year of internship and one year of surgery residency at Frankford and Temple Hospitals in Philadelphia he began private practice as a family physician in Ely, MN in 1954. He practiced in Miami, Florida, and Ely, MN, where he tirelessly served the community as a family physician for over 20 years.



He was professor and head of the Department of Family Practice (Medicine) and Community Health from 1971-1995 and remained a professor in the department until he retired from the University in 1998. Under his leadership the department grew to include one of the largest family practice residency programs in the country, educating a significant number of primary care physicians serving Minnesota and the nation. He was an innovative and tireless administrator and educator as he sought and gained resources to strengthen programs in medical education. Under his leadership in 1985 the department established UCare Minnesota, a very successful HMO; Dr. Ciriacy chaired the UCare board of directors for ten years.



Dr. Ciriacy was a powerful advocate for the specialty of family medicine. He was active in state and national medical associations, medical education organizations and committees. He was president of the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.



He stayed current with medical literature and maintained his board certification and family physician licensure well into his retirement. Throughout his life, he faced adversity with courage and resilience. He worked tirelessly on behalf of family medicine education; as a clinician, he delivered medical care with compassion and respect for his patients.



Dr. Ciriacy was an avid hunter, pilot, Honda Gold Wing motorcycle rider, welder and scuba diver and enjoyed camping in his motor home.

Neighbors and friends, for their kindness and generosity with their time and personal support include; Steve and Sharon Summers, Steve and Annette Hanson, Mike Schellenberg and Chris Peterson, Darla Resner, Rowena Lund, Janet Franks, Karen Virchow, Jon and Ann Kemske, and many others.



A memorial service will be held at 5:30 PM on Monday, July 10, 2006 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake, MN 651-464-3556. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 3:00-5:30 pm, followed by a memorial service.



In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Centennial Fire District, HealthEast Hospice or Wildlife Forever.
