Franz Westermeier

Colonel Franz X. Westermeier, U.S. Army (Retired)


passed away November 30, 2008.  He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Vivian Vinton Westermeier; son Franz "Rusty" and his daughter-in-law Floy Westermeier of Glenwood, Iowa; as well as several neices and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother Adolph E. Westermeier; and sister Wilhelmine Stoettner. Franz and Vivian were residents of St. Louis Park for more than 20 years before moving to Scandia, MN. He was born February 18, 1918 in Munich Bavaria Germany and came to this country as a young man.  His distinguished 30-year career in the United States Army included service during WWII and then culminated in the Army Reserves.  He served as Associate Professor of German at Macalester College for 30 years as well.  Franz will be remembered for writing the first comprehensive plan for New Scandia Township, his many years of service in helping develop the community by serving on the Scandia Planning Commission, and for his service to the Washington County Parks Commission.  During his time on the Parks Commission, he also served as President of the Public Body County Planning and Development Committee.  Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 25293 Redwing Avenue, Franconia Twp./Shafer, MN. Visitation 5-8 PM, Tuesday at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Interment with military honors in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Thursday.
