Gordon Hutchison

May 15, 1926 — April 25, 2012

Gordon William Hutchison was born to Emmett Harold and Alma Edna (Roberts) Hutchison on May 15, 1926 near Dumont, Iowa in Butler County. He died April 25, 2012 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, IA. Grandpa Bill, after whom Gordon was named, gave him his first pony, at the young age of 5, and he was "hooked for life". From then on he had horses, eventually raising, breeding, and showing Arabians. Gordon and his children participated in trail rides with the Dumont Saddle Club. Gordon was fortunate to be raised by godly parents and attended church with his family, where he learned about Jesus and received Him as his personal Lord and Savior. It was also at church where he met his future wife, Beverly Jean Smith. Gordon enlisted in the Navy and served as a pharmacist's mate 3rd class during World War II, from Dec. 7, 1944 to Aug. 21, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. Gordon married his sweetheart Dec. 28, 1946 in Troy, Kansas. Gordon and Bev began their married life farming southwest of Dumont, where their first two children, Dean (April 1948) and Sheryl (July 1949), were born. In 1950 they applied for and were selected to homestead in the Heart Mountain region of Wyoming, where they spent 3 years while raising seed peas, alfalfa hay, and children. Their son (Emmett) Lee was born (April 1951) in Tucson, AZ, when Bev and the children stayed with her aunt & uncle in order to be close to a hospital. Due to Gordon's dad's health the family returned to Iowa and soon began farming near Dumont, where their son Mark was born (Nov. 1958). In 1975 Gordon had to give up farming due to his failing health. He and Bev moved to Tucson, AZ, where he felt better in the "dry heat". There they enjoyed shuffle boarding, bowling, jigsaw puzzles, reading westerns, traveling by RV, and meeting new friends. In 2001 they returned to Iowa in order to be closer to family, first living in Hampton and finally in Waverly. He has resided at Bartels since March 2008. Gordon is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly of 65 years; three sons, Dean (Barb) of Waverly, Lee (Sheryle) of Nashua, and Mark (Tania) of Bagley, WI; his nine grandchildren, Todd (Jennifer) Hutchison, Amy (Marty Wolske) Hutchison, Paul (Susan) Hutchison, Mariah (Dr. Paul) Schumacher, Joel (Christa) Hutchison, Aaron (Jessica) Hutchison, Travis Hutchison, Melissa (Lupe) Guerrero, Tory (Kelsy) Hutchison; 17 great grandchildren, with 3 more on the way. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Dorothy, Max, and Virginia (Warren) Duit, and his daughter Sheri (Hutchison) Lake in July 2000. Funeral Service will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 1110 4th Street S.W., Waverly, Iowa at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2012. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the family. Interment to follow at Dumont Cemetery, in Dumont, Iowa.
