Jack Buys

Jack Buys, born October 15, 1924, in Franklin, Pennsylvania to James and Ethel Buys, was raised by his mother in Greenville, Pennsylvania and graduated from Greenville High School in June 1943. In September Jack volunteered for the US Navy whom he served for 2 ½ years. He rose to Radioman Third Class on destroyer USS Knapp which fought in the Pacific theater for the duration of WWII receiving an Honorable Discharge in March, 1946. He attended Allegheny College, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in business education in 1949. In 1948 he married Jean Boughner. They have four children; Earl, Paul, Gail, and Joel. In 1950 he entered St. Paul Bible Institute (now Crown College) and graduated with a Bachelor of Theology in Missions. For three years he taught business education at Atwater High School in western Minnesota. He came to teach at Forest Lake in 1958 where he taught for 34 years until his retirement in 1992. He served as Forest Lake Township clerk for 21 years. Ever an avid gardener, he dedicated his attention to his beloved garden in his autumn years. Jack is survived by his wife, Jean Boughner Buys; their four children; four grandchildren, Tyler and Amanda (children of Joel and Laurie Ingberg), Caitlin and Laura (daughters of Paul and Julie); great granddaughter, Lily; sister, Olive Francis. A special thank you to Kathy Marking for all her help with meals, baked goods, labor in the garden, shopping, and the transition to the Arbors. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 8, 2013 at Faith Lutheran Church, 886 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation will be 2:00-6:00 p.m., Sunday at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake, and from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Monday at the church prior to the service. The American Legion and VFW will provide a ceremony honoring his service in the U.S. Navy at the conclusion of the visitation on Sunday. Also full military honors will be celebrated at interment in Scandinavian Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Forest Lake Community Scholarship Foundation.
