Jim Hermes, a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, godfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2024, at his home in Forest Lake, Minnesota. Born on November 16, 1936, in Tacoma, Washington, Jim was the son of Eleanor Muriel Halpin and Henry Wade Hermes.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Joshua Hermes; his sister, Patricia Cowing and brother-in-law, Carl Cowing, and his brothers, David and Ted Hermes. He was also preceded by his brothers-in-law, Peter Machaiek, Tony Swanson, and Raymond Swanson.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Nancy (Swanson) Hermes. They were married on August 6, 1966, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his children: Sarah Bye (Ron), Wade Hermes (Teresa), Joe Hermes (Melanie), and John Hermes (Casey). He is also survived by his sister, Marianne Machaiek, his brother, Mike Hermes (Pat), and his sisters-in-law, Ann Marie Hoheisel (Ron) and Joyce Swanson. Jim’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Alex Bye, Jack Bye, Victor Bye, Ryan Hermes, Ava Hermes, Adele Hermes, and Bryn Hermes, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Jim’s strong faith in Jesus Christ and his Catholic beliefs were central to his life. He loved sharing his faith with others and often reminded people that Jesus loves them.
Jim worked as a realtor for over 60 years in Forest Lake, starting his career with his father, Henry, and taking over the family business after his father’s passing. Hermes Real Estate, Merrill Lynch, Burnett Realty, and RE/MAX.
Jim will be remembered for his friendly personality, laughter, and his ability to make friends everywhere he went. His corny jokes and kindness made a lasting impression on everyone he met. If you knew Jim, you could usually hear him before you could see him.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 24th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake, MN 55025. On Wednesday, September 25th, there will be another visitation at The Church of St. Peter, 1250 South Shore Drive, Forest Lake, MN 55025, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service, and burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Forest Lake, MN.
Memorials preferred to family or St. Peters Catholic Church.
Jim’s kindness and spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.
