Jerry Johnson

Jerry L. Johnson, age 68, of May Township, died tragically in an auto accident on December 22, 2014. He was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on August 21, 1946 to Glenn and Hazel (Fetting) Johnson. In 1964, Jerry graduated from South Saint Paul High School. Jerry's higher education was completed through Dunwoody Institute, where he studied architectural drafting. Jerry served in the United States Navy until he was honorably discharged in 1971. Following is Navy discharge, Jerry worked professionally as a carpenter and was a proud member of the Carpenters and Joiners Union Local 87. Jerry's humble presence often caught people off guard with his infectious smile and sense of humor. Jerry found enjoyment through his variety of hobbies, including classic cars, riding his Harley, sailing and bowling. He was inspired by his wife Karen's love of dogs to become an active participant of the St. Croix Valley Kennel Club, The North Star Working Group and the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of the Greater Twin Cities. Further, Jerry was very active in the Scandia-Marine Lion's Club; serving as president in 2008-2009. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 2010, as recognition of his humanitarian work and was always thrilled to drive the Lion's Club fire truck in many parades. He was also a member of the American Legion. Jerry became a member of Elim Lutheran Church when he and his wife Karen were wed in 2004. He loved being a member of the church and this community. Jerry will be sadly missed by his wife, Karen; sons, Russ (Sheila), Erik (Chelsea); daughter, Kelly Foster (Bob); grandchildren, Lane, Reed, Wren; sister, Pat González (Miguel); nephew, Tony; niece, Gina; sister, Karen Johnson; mother-in-law, Judy Rydeen and family; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Hazel Johnson; and father-in-law, Gordon Rydeen. Funeral Service 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Elim Lutheran Church, 20971 Olinda Trail N., Scandia. Visitation 5-8 p.m., Monday at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake, with 7:45 Ritual Ceremony, accorded by American Legion Post 225. Visitation will continue 9-11 a.m., Tuesday at the church. Interment at Elim Lutheran Cemetery.
