Marianne de Sobrino 1933-2023
Marianne was born in Brooklyn New York on May 24, 1933 to German immigrant parents, Fred and Anne Hales, and passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023 at Parmly on the Lake, Chisago City, Minnesota.
Marianne received an English degree from Queen’s College New York and a Master’s degree in child development from Cornell University. In 1957 Marianne moved to Madrid, Spain to marry Ricardo de Sobrino. They lived in Madrid for three years until they returned to the U.S, living first in Princeton N.J. and settling in Palo Alto California where they raised their family.
In 1989 Marianne retired and moved to rural Eureka, California where she volunteered with the library, the Sierra Club, and other local environmental organizations. She loved being surrounded by her books, the redwoods and the ocean. She was passionate about the San Francisco 49ers and the Giants. The friends and relationships that she built in Eureka were some of the best of her long life. When her health began to decline in 2014 she moved to Minnesota to be closer to her grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Marianne enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge, the out of doors and traveling to new places. She always lived the life she chose and passed with few regrets.
She is survived by her brother, Frank Karp (Grace Goc); her children, Richard de Sobrino, Michelle de Sobrino, Cristina de Sobrino (Todd Arnold) and grandchildren, Sara de Sobrino and Rachel de Sobrino; her niece, Cat Koshkin and other loving relatives.
No memorial service is planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Humboldt Library Foundation or the Redwood Chapter of the Sierra Club.
