Mary Nixon

May 9, 1941 — January 30, 2014

Mary Beth Nixon, age 72 of Forest Lake, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Birchwood Health Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary Beth was born May 9, 1941 in Tyler, Minnesota, the daughter of Floyd and Bethelyn (Herron) Nixon. Mary taught in the Owatonna and Forest Lake School Districts, pioneering and focusing in the area of special education. During her early teaching years, Mary traveled the world, collecting arts and crafts from the countries she visited. She was the family historian. Mary kept in touch with and documented, through scrap booking, the lives and legends of the Nixon-Herron family, dating back to the time they immigrated to the United States. Mary was a beloved teacher and friend. Former students were still calling to catch up and enthusiastically greet "Nixon" in the community. Many of her friendships spanned her lifetime and were cherished as family.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brothers, Jim (Jeanne) Nixon and John Nixon; niece, Marnie (Chadwick Burt) Nixon; nephews Michael (Jackie Kolbinger) Nixon, Russ (Cindy) Nixon, Bob (Jill) Nixon; and many great nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Balaton, Minnesota at a later date.
