Michael Steven Richter passed away peacefully at the age of 71, surrounded by his family and best friends, after a courageous seven-year battle with cancer.
Survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Debra Richter; his children, Amy Richter and Shawn (Mary) Richter; his grandchildren Dylan, Christina (Simon), Joselynn and Josephine; his sisters Donna (Bob) Nelson, Cheryl Lennon, Linda (Kevin) Palmquist, Kathleen Richter, Ellie (Dan) Baer; and many nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Richter and Jeanette Pederson.
Mike proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1971-1975, forming lifelong friendships. Five years ago, Mike reconnected with some fellow sailors, forming a close bond and sharing many adventures and laughs together. These family friends provided Mike and Debra with much-needed support and companionship during his final year.
A dedicated provider and hard worker, Mike was a true family man who took great pride in caring for and spending time with his loved ones. An avid fisherman, Mike greatly enjoyed the peacefulness of being on the water or the ice, whether the fish were biting or not.
He was known for his ability to bring joy to those around him through his great sense of humor, timeless jokes and excellent storytelling. Mike will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we honor Mike’s life, we share these important words: “Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you: Jesus Christ and the American soldier. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.” Mike’s commitment to his family, his faith and his country leaves a lasting and inspiring imprint of on all of us. His dedication and memory will live on in the hearts of all who cared for him.
