Richard "Dick" Smith

Richard "Dick/Rich" Smith, originally from St. Paul, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at home surrounded by his family. At 65, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

Rich was passionate about the outdoors, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golf throughout his life. He loved spending time at the family cabin in northern Minnesota, where he created countless memories with his family. In his retirement, he discovered a love for pickleball.

Professionally, Rich had a servant’s heart, dedicating his career to helping others. His work in social services made a profound impact on many lives. In his early years he worked with high-risk youth in Duluth, and then with agencies serving adults with developmental and mental challenges. He facilitated international adoption at Lutheran Social Services and Children’s Home Society and worked at the Minnesota Health Department implementing statutory programs in vital records.. As the Executive Director/CEO of Family Pathways, Rich’s leadership and expertise ensured that services addressing food insecurity, domestic violence, senior assistance, and support of teens were available for countless individuals in the community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Jean. Rich is survived by his loving wife, Ann; children, Alyssa (James) McArthur and Eric (Danie); grandchildren, Joanna, Myla, and Finley; his brother, Tom (Catalina); many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Rich’s legacy of kindness, service, and love for his family will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will be held 5-7 PM, on Thursday, January 23, 2024, at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Faith Lutheran Church, 886 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Family will be greeting friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment at Faith Lutheran Church Memorial Prayer Garden.
