Richard "Dick" Merle Winandy passed away March 7, 2024, at the age of 82.
He was born in St Paul to Arthur and Sally Winandy, raised with brother Jack and sister Mavis, graduated from Ramsey High School and attended the University of Minnesota. Richard served in the Army and worked in a pharmacy. In Germany, he met and married Helga and they returned to Minnesota where they raised two daughters, Davina and Marlys. Richard worked at 3M in St Paul doing pharmaceutical research, retiring in 2002 after 35 years at 3M.
Richard and Helga spent much time in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, in Quetico Provincial Park, and on the Superior Hiking trail with fishing, camping, and hiking trips. He also enjoyed hunting and canoeing more locally. During the winter months, many hours were spent cross country skiing, including 13 Birkebeiner races and one 2-day Mora Vasaloppet.
After retirement, Richard and Helga moved to Forest Lake, lived in the fourth house they built, and spent many years involved in their 3 grandchildren’s lives. In addition to enjoying his woodworking, camping, fishing, and hunting, Richard started new hobbies in retirement including jewelry making and cooking. He also enjoyed socializing with old and new friends.
Richard will be deeply missed by his wife of 56 years, Helga Winandy; daughter, Davina; daughter, Marlys, son-in-law, Daniel, and grandchildren, Nicole, Derek, and Alex; sister, Mavis; niece, Suzanne; nephew, Guy; and many other friends and family. He is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Sally, brother, Jack.
A private family service will be held March 15, 2024, with interment at Calvary Cemetery in Forest Lake.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Friends of the Boundary Waters or a favorite charity of your choice.
