Larson, Richard (Dick), age 77, formerly of Forest Lake and St. Paul, MN, passed away November 4, 2012 in Oceanside, CA of heart disease. He was born August 13, 1935 to Richard & Esther (Sattervall) Larson in Minneapolis, MN.He served in the US Navy from 1953-57 Dick received his B.S. in Education from MN State University, Mankato in 1961. He went on to receive his Master of Fine Art in 1970 from the University of Iowa. Dick taught high school level art from 1961-63 in Blue Earth, MN and from 1963-95 at Johnson High School in St. Paul. He coached Wrestling at Blue Earth and Johnson, as well as gymnastics and football at Johnson. He was very proud of the numerous students that went onto professional careers in the arts, and of the individual and team achievements of his athletes. Near the end of his teaching career, he transitioned from coach to Athletic Director at Johnson, a post he held until retirement. Throughout his teaching career, he also pursued his passion for art professionally, displaying his work in galleries and juried art fairs in the Midwest. In 2002, Dick and his wife, Arlys Larson, moved to Oceanside, CA to be close to their grandchildren. During retirement the two had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the US, Canada, Caribbean, and Europe. Prior to moving to California he enjoyed summers on Forest Lake fishing any day the weather would permit. Preceded in death by his wife, Arlys. Dick is survived by his children, Richard (Carolyn) Larson III, Susan (Tom Erf) K. Larson, Erik (Amy) K. Larson; grandchildren, Ryan R., Erik C., Marguerite L. and Meredith M. Larson and Griffin and Reed Larson-Erf; and step-grandchildren, Maya & Talya Erf. Funeral Service 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 17, 2012 at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 886 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation 4-8 PM, Friday, November 16, 2012 at MATTSON FUNERAL HOME, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church. Interment at Acacia Park Cemetery, Mendota Heights. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
