Shirley Patricia Doberstein, born March 20, 1932, in Lake City, Minnesota, to Andrew and Verna (Kuyath) Holmstadt, was a woman whose vibrant spirit and sharp wit left a lasting impact on all who knew her. After graduating with an associate degree in business, Shirley worked for many years with the State of Minnesota, bringing both dedication and a strong sense of purpose to her career.
On July 29, 1961, Shirley married Albert Doberstein Jr. in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and together, they made their home on the Doberstein family property on Linwood Lake—a place that had been cherished by generations of their family. It was here that Shirley’s love for gathering friends and family thrived. Her home was a sanctuary where laughter and joy filled the air, often accompanied by her beloved collection of dishware that became part of countless memories shared over meals and celebrations.
Shirley was known for her spunk and warmth. She was a fireball—witty, sweet, direct, and never afraid to speak her mind. Her sense of humor and loving nature brought comfort to those around her. A true lover of nature, she adored cardinals and found peace in their presence. Her trips to Las Vegas were legendary; she had a knack for the slot machines, often leaving a winner.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Verna Holmstadt; her husband, Albert Doberstein Jr.; and her siblings, Andrew Holmstadt Jr., Marlene Kuhlmann, and Judy Brezany. She is survived by her sisters, Barbara Holmstadt and Carolyn (Charles) Whitney; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, family members, and friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Shirley’s legacy of love, laughter, and the courage to be herself will be missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
