We are saved by grace alone. Let us remember with joy and thanksgiving what God has done through his servant Tom. Thomas Joseph Nerud, Sr. was granted life by his Creator on December 1, 1942, the son of Joseph and Hildegarde (Wolff) Nerud. On Christmas Day (December 25) 1942 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, St. Paul, MN he received the gift of eternal life as a child of God in Christ through Holy Baptism. Tom confessed his baptismal faith publicly before the altar of God at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on March 25, 1956 on his Confirmation day and was admitted to receive the holy and precious body and blood of the Lord. On August 24, 1963 God joined Tom and Shirley Gilcher as one in marriage before His altar at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Their marriage was richly blessed with two sons, Thomas Jr. and Timothy and five grandchildren. On September 14, 2014 God blessed Tom, at the age of 71 and called his soul to eternal rest and peace, where he awaits the final resurrection of the dead. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord. We give thanks to God our Father through Jesus Christ our Lord for our brother, Tom. Tom was an active member of the church, whether in Minnesota, Illinois, or Iowa. In addition to regularly attending worship service and partaking of the Lord's Supper, he eagerly accepted the roles of congregational president, elder, trustee, board of education, usher, and Sunday school teacher over the years. Tom served from 1962 to 1964 with the United States Army Field Artillery as a Radio Teletype Operator. This service included 14 months stationed on the DMZ in Korea. Tom had many interests in this life. His favorites included fishing, gardening, home and yard improvement projects, and especially his grandkids. Whatever they were involved in became his greatest interest and joy at that moment. He cherished every minute spent with them. Tom was a loving husband and a caring father. He was a hard working man who always found time for his family. Our fondest memories include him playing the accordion, coaching sports, scouting (even when mom was supposed to be the den leader), fishing, hunting, playing games, building puzzles, and building boats. Tom was an outgoing Christian family man with a crazy sense of humor. He will be missed by family members and friends alike. We look forward to our joyful reunion in heaven.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley; sons, Thomas Jr. (Michelle), Timothy (Heidi); grandchildren, Victoria, Thomas III, Sarah, Nicole, Katrina; brother, Kenneth (Joan); other extended family and friends.
