William Mackey

William H. Mackey, 83, formerly of Forest Lake and Wyoming, MN, died Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at Agrace Hospice in Madison, WI. Bill was born January 29, 1931 to William S. and Inez Mackey. Though he lived his last 6 months in Madison, WI, his heart never left his boyhood home of Forest Lake, Minnesota. Bill went to Forest Lake High School where he was both an excellent student and all-around athlete playing basketball, football, baseball and even throwing the shot put. He was also involved in student government and served as student council president. Bill married his high school sweetheart Joan Reed on November 12, 1949. Joan and Bill were married 60 years. The first in his family to attend college, Bill graduated from Hamline University with a degree in accounting and then continued on to earn a Master's degree in finance and accounting from the University of Minnesota. Bill worked for Honeywell Inc. his entire career retiring as Corporate Controller in 1990. In the early 1960s Honeywell sent Bill and his family to Bad Homburg Germany for a year and a half where he worked for Honeywell's Aerospace Division. Ever after, Dad loved to drop German phrases into his conversations. Dad served on the Board of Directors for the Shriner's Childrens Hospital and was generous in his giving to the Shriners and his other favorite charities. He was a great poker player and an avid golfer. Some of his happiest moments were undoubtedly spent on the links with his golf buddies. He also had a great fondness for his Mercedes and his beloved Persian cat, Dinah. Bill Mackey is survived by his daughters Susan Mackey (Bob Schneiger), Joy Mackey and Kim Fowler (Dave) and his grandchildren, Adrienne Mackey (Brad Wren), Dale Mackey (Shawn Pointer), Patrick Fowler and Anna Fowler as well as nieces, nephews and all of his wife's family who continued to love and support him even after Joan's death. He is predeceased by his wife, Joan, his brother Bob, and his parents. Visitation 5-8 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2014 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Graveside Service 11:00 a.m., Saturday at Wyoming Methodist Cemetery. Following the service, friends and family are invited to a Memorial Lunch at The Lodge at Forest Hills, 7530 210th St N, Forest Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Meadows on Fairview, Wyoming, MN, Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI, Oakwood Lutheran Homes in Madison, WI or the Alzheimer's Association.
